What Is The Standard Hole Size For A Deadbolt?

If you need to install a new deadbolt, it can be confusing to understand the right size of the hole to drill.

The right-sized door hardware is essential for doors to operate effectively. Plus, the deadbolt fitting is particularly important if you don’t want an ill-fitting door.

A standard-sized deadbolt usually fits into a backset measuring around 2 3/8 to 2 3/4 inches.

The deadbolt should be located about 6 to 12 inches above the lock. A cross bore measuring 2 1/8 inches (diameter) and a latch bore of 1 inch is usually required for a deadbolt.

In this article, we will discuss the entire process of drilling holes for deadbolts, the required hole size, as well as a simple guide on how to go about the process by yourself.

Are Deadbolts A Standard Size?

Yes, there is a standard size for most deadbolts which is 2 1/8 inches. Deadbolts also have different case depths, the most common ones being 64mm and 76mm.

Different brands offer different sizes of deadbolts. The smaller ones are usually around 2 inches and the larger ones are up to 5 inches.

You can also get an extension for your deadbolt if you wish to attach a latch to the center of the door.

How Do You Measure For A Deadbolt?

Before buying a deadbolt, you should always measure the exact size of your door, especially its thickness. Depending on these measurements, a smaller or larger deadbolt may be a better fit for your door.

Typically, most doors are around 1 3/8” and 1 3/4”  in thickness. As a rule of thumb, it’s best to measure twice and only cut once to get the best results.

When choosing a deadbolt set, you will check the measurements using a standard template.

The template will also help you with other instructions for measuring everything required. Important measurements include cross and latch bores, lock spacing, and backset.

To help you install the right deadbolt, you can refer to these standard measurements as well:

  • Door thickness typically ranges from 1 3/8 to 1 3/4 inches.
  • Door jamb hole is usually at least 7/8 inches in diameter and with a depth of 1 inch.
  • Deadbolt faceplate width is at least 1 inch.
  • Deadbolt faceplate height typically measures 2 1/4 inches.
  • Backset distance is mostly 2 3/8 to 2 3/4 inches from the door’s edge to the center of its cross bore.

How Much Space Should Be Between A Door Knob And Deadbolt?

The standard space required between the center of the deadbolt and a doorknob is about 5 1/2 to 6 inches above the handle.

However, if you are installing a special lock for a chain door or a sliding patio door, the measurements will need to vary.

In rare cases, the distance may need to be less if there is little door space that can be used.

In this situation, the solution is to install the deadbolt closer to the doorknob. At the same time, the two should not stick too close together for the locks to work effectively.

What Size Hole Saw Do I Need For A Deadbolt?

Once you have drilled the primary hole to install the deadbolt or doorknob, you will need to create another hole so the sliding bolt can pass through.

It is recommended to use a 1″ hole saw for this task. A saw specially built for making holes will do the best job. It will be more slow but also more accurate which minimizes the chances of error.

If you purchased a door installation kit, you will probably get the required 1″ hole saw with it. Alternatively, you can also use a 1″ spade bit.

What Should The Deadbolt Hole Size Be?

To clarify this part of the process, a deadbolt bore hole is the point where you will be mounting the doorknob.

Whereas, a cross bore is the area where you will install the latch. Different door lock types usually have different deadbolt hole sizes.

For standard-sized doors, you can get a door lock installation kit with a deadbolt jig that universally fits most of them.

While installing the deadbolt, the standard hole sizes are 1 inch in diameter for the latch bore and 2 1/8 inches diameter for the cross bore. It is essential to use the correct drill size for drilling the bores. With the right drill bit, you can simply make the hole without having to measure it first.

What Size Are Deadbolt Screws?

You can attach the new strike plate using three inch screws. For maximum security, you should always go for screws measuring 2 1/2″ or longer.

If the hole you are driving the screws through seems too small, you should drill it out some more so the screws can fit better.

Is Deadbolt Hole Same Size As Door Knob?

Yes, most of the time the door knob and deadbolt will be of the same size. This is most commonly 2 1/8″ in the US. However, it is still recommended to check the exact specifications of your hardware as the deadbolt size can vary.

The standard preparation for a door with a door knob as well as a deadbolt is to create two sets of bore holes and cross bores. These are typically stacked on top of each other.

How To Install A Deadbolt?

You can easily install a deadbolt at home by following these instructions:

1. Measure The Height Line

Start by determining the correct position for installing the deadbolt. Usually, this is about 40 to 45 inches above the floor. It is recommended to measure the door frame’s edge along the floor to get the best measurement.

If there is an existing door knob, you can place the deadbolt around 4 to 6 inches above the knob. You can use a pencil to mark the exact height line.

2. Use The Template To Mark The Holes

You can use the template in the deadbolt set to mark the holes for the deadbolt.

If you’re installing a new deadbolt, you will need to make a 1-inch hole from the door’s edge. Then, you will mark the center point from the latch bore and cross bore.

Make sure that the holes are correctly aligned as they will hold the deadbolt in place. Using a carpenter’s square, you can check if the alignment is proper.

3. Bore The Cylinder Holes

Now, it’s time to bore the holes. You can insert a hole saw into the drill to do so. Make sure to place the drill bit on the center of the mark.

Then, drill a 1/8 inch pilot hole halfway through until you see the pilot bit coming out of the other side.

Now, flip to the other side and drill from here until the hole is made completely. It is important to switch sides as the wood won’t splinter this way. Plus, it creates a nice and clean hole.

4. Prepare The Latch Hole

You can use an auger bit or spade to bore the latch hole you had marked. Make sure that the latch plate is of the correct size, according to the latch hole.

Make an outline of the plate and then carve out the marked area. The mortise should be deep enough for the plate to be installed in a way that it sits flush with the door’s edge.

5. Install The Deadbolt

Now, you need to install the deadbolt into place using screws, Before doing so, remember to check the fitting of the thumb lever and cylinder and place all the parts in the correct positions.

6. Secure The Strike Plate

Basically, a strike plate is a flat piece of metal with a hole in it for the bolt. It is installed opposite to the doorknob or deadbolt and needs to be securely attached to protect the door from damage.

To do this, the hole in the strike-plate should match the bolt in the deadbolt. Simply cover the flat end of the bolt using paint or marker and then extend the bolt so it recesses into the door jamb.

Next, make two overlapping holes with a depth of 1 inch, above and under the latch’s midpoint. Use a chisel to make a recess so that the strike plate sits flush. Now, attach the strike-plate using screws.

In Conclusion

It is always recommended to install deadbolts if you want to add an additional layer of security to your door system. Remember, the correct deadbolt size is key is to make the most of it.

It’s not super difficult to install a deadbolt, especially if you have the basic know-how of door preparation. Plus, you will get a template along with the deadbolt set to guide you with the process.

Make sure to avoid loose fittings while doing the installation, so if there’s any confusion, it’s best to get the job done by a professional contractor.
